Manchester United Says Organized Ticket-Touting Network Dismantled, Fan Group Calls for Protest Before Derby

Manchester United has canceled 685 season tickets in a ticket touting investigation, with the club believing it has dismantled an organized ticket network. The strong action has triggered a strong backlash among supporters.

Investigation results: 685 season tickets canceled

The club released an update on the investigation before this weekend's match, confirming that 685 accounts had been banned, while another 464 fans received reduced sanctions or final warnings.

In a statement, Manchester United said: "Where there has been serious misuse of the ticketing system for financial gain, we have issued bans. This includes operating organized ticket networks that use hundreds of accounts to control, sell and distribute tickets. These actions undermine genuine fans' fair access to tickets and have no place at Manchester United."

The club also said the investigation found 1,617 accounts requiring further review due to "unusual activity."

Among fans whose season tickets were canceled, 113 did not respond to information requests, 73 did not appeal, and the bans of 499 people were upheld by an independent appeal panel.

The club also acknowledged that the investigation had "caused serious concern and distress for some supporters."

Fan group calls for protest: the line has been crossed

Fan group The 1958 called on supporters to "stand together" before Sunday's Manchester derby to protest the "season ticket ban controversy," declaring that "the line has been crossed."

A spokesperson for the group said on Tuesday: "Manchester United fan groups are being called to unite after reports that supporters have been banned and had season ticket penalties imposed without clear and convincing evidence. For generations, Red Devils fans who attend matches have given their time, money and loyalty to Manchester United, both home and away. That loyalty deserves respect."

The spokesperson added: "This is not about one organization or one person. This is about how Manchester United treats fans who attend matches. It may not affect you today, and it may not affect you next time, but that day will eventually come for all of us. All Red Devils, all groups, one voice."

According to The Press Association, the protest is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, with supporters asked to gather outside the Bishop Blaize pub at Old Trafford.

Tickets to be returned to waiting list

Manchester United said the focus has now shifted to ensuring these tickets are returned to supporters. "All season tickets released through this process will be made available to supporters on the season ticket waiting list."

Last month, Manchester United said an independent company reviewing activity on the club's ticketing platform from March to June had "identified significant and organized ticket touting activity."

The impact of the investigation continues to develop, with tensions between the fan group and the club increasing further ahead of the derby.
