Mexico captain Edson Alvarez said he "categorically denies" allegations that he was involved in an alleged kidnapping plot.

According to media reports, filmmaker Juan Jose Lopez Ordonez accused Alvarez of being involved in a plot to kidnap him in Mexico in November 2024. Ordonez claimed that he was kidnapped by two people at the time, who threatened him, covered his eyes, carried weapons and injected a substance into his neck.

Ordonez also claimed that Alvarez owed him 3.5 million pesos (around $206,000 or £152,500), money that came from their collaboration on a documentary project. The filmmaker said he first requested payment in 2024 and was also involved in a dispute with Alvarez's family over a property he claimed to own. The allegations were made during an interview with Mexican media outlet TVNotas.

Player statement: categorically rejects any connection

Alvarez strongly denied the allegations and said his team would take legal action against anyone making what he described as false accusations against him.

The 28-year-old player posted a statement on Instagram, which read: "Given the recent reports and comments circulating, I believe it is necessary to respond to this matter clearly and firmly. I categorically reject any accusation or attempt to associate my name with events, disputes or actions that are completely unrelated to me."

"Over the past few months, my name and image have repeatedly been used to generate more media attention around something that has nothing to do with me. Before this, I chose not to respond. However, everything has a limit, and imposing knowledge, responsibility or involvement in such matters on me without presenting any evidence has clearly crossed that line."

"If anyone believes they have evidence of any wrongdoing by me, there are authorities, prosecutors and courts where it can be submitted. Serious accusations must be supported by evidence and presented to the relevant authorities, rather than through statements that place sensationalism and media exposure above accuracy and truth. I will not allow my name to be used to fuel conflicts between third parties or to gain media attention."

"Therefore, given the seriousness of these comments, I have instructed my legal team to assess and take appropriate legal action against anyone who makes or spreads false accusations against me. I also want to make one thing clear regarding reports attempting to connect me to this matter through my former partner's father: I have no ability to confirm, deny or comment on claims that may involve third parties, but I have a responsibility to make one thing absolutely clear: I have no connection to the events being reported."

From Ajax to West Ham United

Alvarez joined West Ham United from Dutch club Ajax in August 2023 for a transfer fee of €40 million (around £34.4 million). During his three years at West Ham United, he has made 74 appearances, scoring two goals and providing three assists.

At present, Alvarez's side has made clear that it will pursue legal action over the allegations, while the accuser has not yet presented the evidence he claims to have. The further development of the matter remains to be seen.
