22-year-old left-back signs until 2031 as Newcastle strengthen hold after rejecting Manchester United

Newcastle United have completed a contract extension with Lewis Hall, with the new deal running until 2031. The England left-back turned 22 on Tuesday.

According to club insiders, Hall's new contract does not include a release clause. This summer, Newcastle made it clear to Manchester United that Hall was not for sale. Hall previously had three years remaining on his contract, and the extension adds another two years while also improving his terms.

Manchester United's interest and Newcastle's response

Manchester United's interest in Hall has not completely disappeared and they could try again next summer. But Newcastle are now in a stronger position: they can either reject an offer outright or at least demand a higher transfer fee. Hall came through Chelsea's academy, joined Newcastle on loan in the summer of 2023, and later completed a permanent move for around £28 million. So far, he has made 107 appearances for Newcastle.

A key part of the youth-focused blueprint

Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson acknowledged that the club will continue to trade players, but also hopes to "consistently and convincingly compete" for major trophies before the end of the decade, a phrase used by CEO David Hopkinson. To achieve this, Newcastle are building around a young core, with Hall viewed as an essential part of that vision. Academy graduate Lewis Miley, 20, signed a new deal in May, while Newcastle brought in eight players aged 24 or younger during the summer.

Inside St James' Park, Hall's willingness to remain at the club long term, like Miley, is seen as evidence that Newcastle's ambitious plan remains alive — despite Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak all having requested moves away during the past 13 months.

What Hall said

"I am extremely happy. It is a very proud moment. To play for this club and represent these fans is an absolute honour. I know what it means to them," Hall said.

"The fan base here and the support we get at home or away, in my opinion, is the best in the league. Being able to put a smile on their faces means a lot to me."

"I have a family connection with this club, and that is extremely important for all of us. One of the main reasons I play is to make my family proud, and I know what watching me play for Newcastle United means to them."

"It is a great place to be. We are very happy with the start to the season, especially after the arrival of the new head coach and coaching staff. I think we can continue to achieve truly significant things."

Securing Hall on a new and extended contract is a statement of intent for Newcastle. Although the deal has not completely ended speculation involving Manchester United or the possibility of Hall leaving in the coming years, it does put Newcastle in a stronger negotiating position.
