Liverpool Considered Signing a Right-Back This Summer as Concerns Grow Over Frimpong’s Form

Reports claim that Liverpool explored signing a new right-back this summer and considered competing with Chelsea for Marco Palestra because of concerns over Jeremie Frimpong.

According to reports, the £30 million signing has not performed ideally in the two different positions Liverpool signed him to play, which appears to have prompted the club to examine him as an option before Palestra eventually joined Chelsea.

Frimpong’s issues remain

It was reported that Liverpool encountered difficulties in completing a right-back deal because funds needed to be focused on other areas, while there was also pressure to reduce the wage bill through player sales.

In the end, this meant Frimpong remained in Liverpool’s squad and became the main choice at right-back, which appears far from ideal.

The 25-year-old may still find a turning point at the club, and perhaps new manager Andoni Iraola can get more out of him than Arne Slot did.

However, it is understandable why a talent like Palestra was considered, and it will be interesting to see what kind of impact he eventually has at Chelsea.

Interestingly, Fabrice Hawkins also reported that Liverpool looked at Chelsea right-back Malo Gusto as another option for the position.

Hawkins stated on social media that Gusto was clearly viewed as a loan target for the Merseyside club:
