Champions League About to Begin! Special First-Round Arrangements, One Fewer Team from the Top Five Leagues, Four Clubs Making Debuts

The remaining four places are non-fixed spots. Liverpool and Real Betis received two reward places, while Sporting CP and Shakhtar Donetsk advanced directly without needing playoffs because they had previously won the Champions League and Europa League. The final seven places were decided through playoffs. Viking, LASK Linz, and AEK Athens successfully advanced through one playoff round. Most notably, Azerbaijan's Sabah Baku faced challenges from the first qualifying round, eliminated four opponents in succession, played eight matches in total, and eventually earned a place in the Champions League, which was a remarkable achievement.

The final list of participants includes teams from 16 different leagues, with 21 clubs coming from the top five leagues. The Premier League and La Liga each have five teams, Serie A and the Bundesliga each have four, and Ligue 1 has three. This total is one fewer than last season, mainly because Aston Villa finished fourth in the previous Premier League season, reducing the Premier League's participants to five. In addition, Lyon lost to Fenerbahce in the playoffs, meaning Ligue 1 also failed to send four teams.

The Norwegian league deserves attention. League champions Viking eliminated Dinamo Zagreb, while runners-up Bodo/Glimt defeated Union Saint-Gilloise and NEC Nijmegen. Both teams reached the main competition, raising expectations that they could create more surprises and continue the Nordic football success story. Como from Serie A, Viking from Norway, Sabah Baku from Azerbaijan, and LASK Linz from Austria are the four teams making their first appearances in the Champions League main competition, similar to the newly promoted teams last season. The Norwegian league has had new teams participate for two consecutive years, while Azerbaijan has achieved two consecutive years of club participation, providing major encouragement for other smaller European clubs and demonstrating UEFA's intention to promote diversity.

Like last season, the Champions League opening round has been arranged as a separate match week, with no other cup competitions taking place this week. Europe's three major competitions have all set separate match weeks, with the Champions League taking place this week, the Europa League starting next week, and the Conference League having its separate match week in the sixth round.

Therefore, the battle for the Champions League trophy has already begun. The special arrangements not only make the schedule richer but also spread the matches across three days, with six games scheduled each day and kickoff times set for 12:45 a.m. and 3 a.m. Beijing time. However, the early matches do not feature many major clashes, with only Barcelona hosting Feyenoord and Roma visiting Fenerbahce among the notable fixtures, while most headline matchups are concentrated in the evening.

On the second day, Liverpool challenge Atletico Madrid, and Napoli face Arsenal.
