Handanovic: I wanted to bring my own team, left Inter due to differences in principles

After 14 years at Inter Milan, Samir Handanovic said goodbye to the club. In an interview with Il Giornale today, he explained why he and Inter parted ways. The following are the comments from the former goalkeeper, former captain, and later youth team coach.

Handanovic's candid remarks

"We talked in March, and they gave me the opportunity to coach the reserve team. It would have been a chance for growth, and I would have accepted it originally, but I wanted to bring my own team. I am talking about players, young players, and even younger children. I wanted to create development plans with them. But there is a wrong habit in the Italian youth development system, and this is also one of the reasons behind many of your problems. I would have trained my players during the week, but on match day I would have had to field U23 players who had not taken part in the training sessions. What would be the point of all this? If you are not good enough to play in Serie C, why do this in the reserve team?"

"The club did not accept my principles, so I chose to step away. Unfortunately, I only found out about this in June, when it was already too late to find another destination. It is okay, opportunities will always come. In two weeks I will take the UEFA Pro coaching exam, and I believe I am ready. I really want to coach a senior team."
