0-0! Bayern Held by Schalke, 67-Day League-Leading Record Ends, Kane Fails to Score

Bayern were held by a resilient Schalke. Defending champions Bayern Munich drew 0-0 away to promoted side Schalke in the Bundesliga on Saturday. The draw ended Bayern's record of topping the Bundesliga table for 67 consecutive matchdays. It was also the first time since February 2025 that Bayern had failed to score in a match.

Schalke have won the German championship seven times, but they had not beaten Bayern since 2011. Over the past nine years, they had suffered 12 consecutive defeats against the Bavarian giants and failed to earn any points. After the match, the former Liverpool goalkeeper credited the defensive line for the result. Speaking to Sky Germany, he said: "I just had to keep reminding my teammates: stay strong, push up, drop back."

Harry Kane and Michael Olise both came on from the bench. Although Bayern enjoyed more possession, they failed to create many clear scoring chances. Schalke earned their first point of the season through determined defending. In the 54th minute, Luis Diaz had a great opportunity one-on-one against the advancing Karius, but his attempted chip lacked power and Robin Gosens cleared the ball off the line.

Bayern's best chance came late in the match. Kane's long-range effort from outside the penalty area was tipped away from danger by Karius. Bayern captain Manuel Neuer returned to the club where his career began, and he was booed by home fans every time he touched the ball. This could be the final match for the 40-year-old goalkeeper in his hometown of Gelsenkirchen, with retirement expected after the season. Neuer said: "Of course it would have been better to win. But some of my family members will be happy with this result, so that is fine too. I enjoyed the match." Despite failing to win, Bayern were encouraged by Jamal Musiala's return. Musiala had previously fallen during preseason and later revealed that he had a neurological condition.

Nwaneri's Bundesliga debut helped Dortmund complete a comeback. Ethan Nwaneri, who joined Borussia Dortmund on loan from Arsenal, created an own goal late in the match to help Dortmund overturn a 0-2 deficit away from home and beat Hoffenheim 3-2. Hoffenheim controlled the match during the first hour, but as Dortmund gradually found their rhythm, they lost control. Dortmund scored three goals in the final 30 minutes to complete the comeback.

Nwaneri is the youngest player in Premier League history to make an appearance. He joined Dortmund on a season-long loan from Arsenal on transfer deadline day. He came on as a substitute after 30 minutes of the match. Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac said of Nwaneri: "I like what I saw. This is exactly why we brought him in... Maybe the goal will not count officially as his, but he created it." Kovac added: "The team plays football without regard for the cost. If we continue playing like this, spaces will appear."

In the 54th minute, Hoffenheim took a 2-0 lead through goals from Leon Avdullahu and Tim Lemperle. Shortly after the 61st minute, striker Serhou Guirassy scored to keep the visitors' hopes alive. Five minutes later, he assisted Fabio Silva to level the score. In the 86th minute, Nwaneri broke down the left and crossed, with the ball taking a clear deflection off home defender Alban Hajdari before flying into the net.

Bundesliga newcomers Elversberg continued their excellent form by beating Borussia Monchengladbach 4-3 away from home to win their first two league matches of the season. Elversberg had trailed 1-3 but fought back to equalize before completing the comeback in stoppage time with a goal from Morris Klattenmacher. With a population of only 13,000, Elversberg is the smallest town in German top-flight history to have a team in the league. They shocked Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 in the opening round.

Leverkusen bounced back from that defeat with a 4-0 home victory over Union Berlin. Argentina internationals Ezequiel Fernandez and Facundo Medina, as well as Patrik Schick and Ibrahim Maza, scored. In addition, Niclas Fullkrug, who returned to Germany on loan from West Ham United, scored his second goal in his last three matches to help Werder Bremen upset RB Leipzig 3-1 at home. Europa League runners-up Freiburg maintained their perfect start to the season with a 1-0 away win over promoted side Paderborn.
