In the early hours of August 22, the 2026-27 Premier League season kicked off at the Emirates Stadium. Defending champions Arsenal hosted newly promoted Coventry, who returned to the top flight after 25 years. After a 3-0 Community Shield victory over FA Cup champions Manchester City and a 3-0 opening league win over the Championship champions, the Gunners announced the start of their title defense with two consecutive clean-sheet victories.

Just 15 minutes into the match, Greek new signing Christos Tzolis won the ball in the attacking area. Riccardo Calafiori sent a low cross from the left, and Kai Havertz finished with a first-time strike in the center to make it 1-0. Eight minutes later, Tzolis delivered another accurate cross from the left, Coventry goalkeeper Ben Wilson Rushworth failed to hold the ball, and Bukayo Saka scored an easy rebound from close range for 2-0. In the 49th minute of the second half, Martin Odegaard scored with a right-footed shot after Ben White's layoff to seal a 3-0 victory.

Throughout the match, Arsenal had more than 70 percent possession and recorded three times as many shots as their opponents. Their attack flowed smoothly and their defense remained solid, while promoted Coventry created almost no meaningful threats. Lampard said after the match: “Arsenal gave us a lesson.”

The standout performer was undoubtedly 24-year-old Greek winger Christos Tzolis, who joined from Club Brugge this summer for €40 million. After providing two assists against Manchester City in the Community Shield, he helped create two more goals in this match. Across his first two competitive matches of the season, he has recorded two assists and two goal-creating contributions. After the match, Odegaard praised Tzolis with four words: “Absolutely brilliant. He played a great game. He is very energetic, difficult to defend against, always looking up and finding the right pass.”

From the Community Shield to the first league round, Arsenal have scored six goals in two matches and conceded none. It has been a very strong start.
