Crystal Palace Could Resume Transfer Talks for Club Brugge Defender Odonnez in January

Reports claim Crystal Palace are preparing to restart their pursuit of Club Brugge defender Jordi Odonnez when the January transfer window opens. The summer move previously collapsed due to concerns over his physical condition.

At the end of August, Crystal Palace were close to signing the Ecuador international. Personal terms were not an issue, and Odonnez was willing to move to Selhurst Park, but a medical examination changed Palace's plans at the final stage.

Medical concerns caused the transfer to collapse

According to Fabrizio Romano, Odonnez had “agreed” to join Crystal Palace, with the total deal worth around €30 million (approximately £26 million) plus add-ons. However, the medical results showed that the foot injury he suffered during the World Cup was more serious than Crystal Palace initially expected. The reported issue was a metatarsal fracture, which led the club to withdraw from the deal rather than commit a large fee to a player who could face a lengthy absence.

Crystal Palace reacted quickly by signing Ona Ahanno as a replacement. The 18-year-old joined on loan from Atalanta this season and will officially become a Chelsea player next summer.

Negotiations could restart in January

However, Odonnez's transfer story may not be over. According to Football FanCast, Crystal Palace plan to reassess the defender's recovery in January before reopening discussions over the deal.

Crystal Palace's decision to withdraw was a sensible one. Despite weeks of negotiations and the player's agreement to join, the club was still able to step away after the medical results and avoid the risk of paying more than £25 million for an injured player. Ahanno's arrival provides immediate squad depth for Crystal Palace while keeping open the possibility of signing Odonnez in the future.

Therefore, the January strategy appears reasonable. If Odonnez makes a full recovery and begins playing regularly for Club Brugge, Crystal Palace will have more reliable information before making an investment.

He remains an attractive target. At 22 years old, he fits Crystal Palace's preference for young defenders, offering physical potential and resale value, while his ability in possession also suits a team looking to be more progressive with the ball.

The only risk is competition. If Odonnez makes a strong return, other clubs could enter the race, and Club Brugge may no longer be willing to negotiate at the original €30 million valuation.
