Barcelona Had Chance to Sign Newcastle Forward Woltemade but Ultimately Decided Against Move

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona had the opportunity to sign Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade before the summer transfer window closed, but the Catalan giants ultimately decided not to move forward with the deal.

The report states that Woltemade's agent proactively contacted Barcelona to explore whether the club was interested in bringing the Germany international to Camp Nou. However, the proposal never reached the stage of serious negotiations. Barcelona had already shifted its recruitment focus to Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus, while Woltemade was also considering other options after his place in Newcastle's pecking order declined.

€75 million investment, 19 minutes of playing time

Woltemade is currently 24 years old and previously moved from Stuttgart to Newcastle for around €75 million. However, after Matthias Jaissle took over the team, his role changed. In the first two Premier League matches of the season, he received only 19 minutes of playing time before joining Juventus on loan, with the loan running until June 2027.

Earlier this summer, Barcelona had already completed a major deal with Newcastle, signing Anthony Gordon for around €80 million including add-ons. Gordon's start in Spain has been encouraging, giving Barcelona's attack greater squad depth.

Timing was unfavorable, and Barcelona chose to withdraw

Barcelona's decision is understandable. Woltemade possesses a unique combination of height, technical ability, and the ability to hold up the ball, giving him many appealing qualities for clubs looking for a traditional striker. However, the timing was not in his favor—Barcelona had turned its attention to signing Jesus, while Gordon and Karim Adeyemi had also strengthened the wide attacking options. Bringing in another high-salary attacker would have created additional pressure on the wage bill and on Hansi Flick's squad management.

For Newcastle, the fact that Woltemade was recommended to other clubs shortly after his €75 million transfer is noteworthy. He arrived as a major investment but soon found himself searching for consistent playing time. Juventus now provides him with an opportunity to rebuild confidence in Serie A.

Barcelona may reassess the center-forward market in the future, but for now, Woltemade is clearly viewed as an opportunity rather than a priority option.
