McManaman: Liverpool Have Been Successful for a Long Time, and I Think That Shows the Value of Everyone Involved

According to Mundo Deportivo, Steve McManaman looked back on his career in an interview and said the most unforgettable moment was winning his first trophy with Liverpool.

McManaman also discussed the source of his talent. He believes part of it came from genetics and part from the good fortune of playing with excellent players at an early age. “I was born with good genes, and I think I inherited them from my parents, so I have always been grateful to them,” he said. “I was also lucky that when I played with friends or people older than me as a child, I was always better than them. In a way, that was just luck.”

However, the Englishman stressed that real improvement came from training with top players during his teenage years. “At 16, I was already playing with many Liverpool first-team players, and they helped me. I am very grateful for everything they taught me.”

The most emotional moment of his remarks came when he recalled the first trophy of his career. “When you support a team from a young age, the only thing you want is to see your team lift a trophy at a special stadium. In England, that stadium is Wembley, and I achieved that when I was 20.”

McManaman described in detail what that celebration meant to him and Liverpool: “There were 80,000 fans in the stadium at the time, and when we returned to Liverpool there were another 200,000 people waiting for you, celebrating with you. Making them happy and bringing them the trophy meant you were adding your own mark to Liverpool’s history. That feeling is very difficult to describe.”

He also added details that made the day such a memorable memory: “My mother, father, sister and brother were all in the stands that day. That is one of the things I remember most clearly.”

At the end of his remarks, the former player analyzed the difference between top teams and others in elite competitions. “It is very important for strong teams to compete in major tournaments. They also have times when they lose, but mentally they are prepared to respond quickly,” he explained. “The strongest teams, the teams with the greatest histories, are always at the front, and that is not surprising.”

McManaman also discussed the public pressure faced by major clubs after defeats. “After losing, you receive a lot of criticism, and the key is how you respond. You have to come back and win the next match.” When discussing players who are more affected by pressure, he added: “Not everyone is the same. Some people are more vulnerable, and you have to look after those who cannot handle criticism in the same way as others. But I think this situation exists in every area of life.”
