According to Goal, Netherlands head coach Xavi appeared at Anfield on Wednesday to assess Van Dijk in person. Liverpool defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League.

Van Dijk played the full match for Liverpool and has made 96 appearances for the Netherlands. Frimpong and Gravenberch came on as substitutes after halftime, with Iraola deciding to bring on the two players. Gakpo missed Liverpool's match due to injury.
Xavi's visit was to hold a face-to-face meeting with Van Dijk. The Netherlands captain had previously stated in the English media that he would have this conversation with the Spanish coach.
Van Dijk said: "It somewhat depends on this conversation, and how I see my own position. Everyone wants to be valued, loved, and feel that they are important. I feel that I can still bring value to the team and that I am still important. If we have the same thoughts on this matter, then until the 2028 European Championship, we will still have two wonderful periods ahead of us. Otherwise, we will see what happens."
