One day after publicly expressing his disappointment that the club had not offered him a new contract, Alexis Mac Allister responded with the winning goal to help Liverpool overturn Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Wednesday's Champions League match.

Mac Allister fired a powerful long-range shot from outside the penalty area as Liverpool completed a comeback at Anfield after falling behind by one goal. The Argentina international, who joined Liverpool in 2023, ran toward the home supporters' stand to celebrate after scoring, a stark contrast to his subdued tone before the match when discussing uncertainty over his position at the club.

"I received the message that the club currently cannot offer me a new contract," he said at Tuesday's pre-match press conference.

Mac Allister's contract runs until 2028, and Liverpool are not in a rush to renew it. However, his goal five minutes into the second half reminded everyone of his value, as the ball flew powerfully into the corner beyond Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak's reach.

Atletico took the lead through Marcos Llorente in the 17th minute, with the midfielder continuing his remarkable scoring record at Anfield. It was his fifth goal in his last three visits to Merseyside; in 2020, he scored twice there to help Atletico eliminate then-defending champions Liverpool before the pandemic lockdown.

Dominik Szoboszlai equalized in the 40th minute before Mac Allister completed the winning strike.
