During this summer's transfer window, the transfer saga surrounding Alvarez became the biggest talking point. Although Alvarez spoke publicly, Atletico Madrid refused to sell him to Barcelona. After months of negotiations and uncertainty, Alvarez ultimately remained at Atletico Madrid.
In La Liga's second and fourth rounds, Alvarez came on as a substitute against Villarreal and Athletic Club, respectively, playing a total of 55 minutes without scoring or providing an assist. He was also booed by Atletico Madrid fans on multiple occasions.
