Liverpool Midfield Transfer List Revealed: Roma's Manu Kone Was Once Close to Chelsea Move

Liverpool are reportedly keeping an eye on Roma midfielder Manu Kone, who came very close to joining Chelsea this summer.

Kone's Near Miss with Chelsea

According to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein in a Q&A column, Chelsea had a strong interest in Kone initially but later turned their attention to Monaco's Lamine Camara, although that deal also failed to materialize. Ornstein's exact words were: "Manu Kone from Roma, he came very close to joining Chelsea before they turned to Camara."

Liverpool's Interest and Alternative Options

Ornstein further stated that Liverpool also regard Kone as one of their potential future options. He added: "I think Liverpool also like him and see him as one of the possible choices for the future." At the same time, Ornstein mentioned that even if Curtis Jones left, Liverpool had originally only planned to sign one midfielder, but if further departures occurred, they would have to consider more options, with Camara being one of them.

Ornstein also specifically mentioned young player Trey Nyoni, describing him as "really impressive," suggesting that external signings are not Liverpool's only route in midfield.

The Real Need for Midfield Improvement

Liverpool's start to the season has not been ideal, with two draws and one win in their first three Premier League matches. After new manager Andoni Iraola took charge, a period of adaptation for the team was expected, but the club's activity in the transfer market has inevitably sparked discussion. Although Liverpool signed an attacking player such as Bradley Barcola late in the summer window, the strengthening of the midfield position is still considered insufficient.

Based on the current squad, either Kone or Camara could provide Iraola with a stronger defensive presence in midfield. Ryan Gravenberch performed well during Liverpool's title-winning campaign in the 2024/25 season, but his form has declined since then, making it understandable that Kone or Camara could potentially bring improvement to the team.
