Sunderland 1-0 Hull City: Talbi's Delicate Chip Sends Black Cats Into League Cup Fourth Round

In the third round of the League Cup, Sunderland eliminated Hull City 1-0 at the Stadium of Light. Chemsdine Talbi's chipped finish in the 71st minute helped Sunderland reach the fourth round, which will be played at the end of October.

A moment of brilliance in an otherwise uneventful match

Both sides had plenty of possession in the first half, but neither was able to seriously threaten the opposing goalkeeper. Hull City had a spell of consecutive corners, but Sunderland cleared them all. For Sunderland, Chris Rigg passed to Josserand, whose shot went wide; Talbi's low effort after breaking into the box was saved by Dillon Phillips; and Ahoka's long-range effort went over the bar.

Sunderland continued searching for chances after the break. In the 71st minute, Talbi produced a chip, sending the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net. It was the only goal of the match.

Heavy rotation still leads to progress

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris made 11 changes to the lineup that drew with Brentford at the weekend. Dayan Metali and Jules Ahoka made their debuts, while Malik Fofana made his first start after previously coming off the bench against Brentford. Hull City manager Sergei Jakirovic also rotated eight players, with Mohamed-Ali Cho, Sorba Thomas and Robinho Vaz making full debuts.

Goalkeeper Dillon Phillips saved a cross from Josserand Tabi shortly after the start and then denied Ahoka's header. However, Hull City were unable to turn those defensive performances into attacking threats.
