A 71st-minute chip settles it as Sunderland send Hull City out with a 1-0 win

Sunderland beat Hull City 1-0, with Talbi's delicate chip providing the only goal. On September 8 Beijing time, the third round of the English League Cup was held at the Stadium of Light, where Sunderland eliminated Hull City with Chemsdine Talbi's 71st-minute goal to advance to the fourth round.

It was a slow-paced contest between two Premier League sides. Both teams enjoyed plenty of possession in the first half, but clear chances to threaten goal were limited. Hull City goalkeeper Dillon Phillips saved Joselan Tabby’s cross shortly after the start and then denied Ahoka’s header. For Sunderland, Chris Rigg played the ball to Joselan, but his shot went wide; Talbi's low effort after breaking into the penalty area was also blocked by Phillips.

The deadlock was broken by a corner counterattack. After Hull City took a corner, Sunderland quickly moved forward, and substitute Thomas Meunier laid the ball off to Talbi. Talbi carried the ball through the Hull City defense and calmly chipped the onrushing goalkeeper, with the ball landing in the bottom corner. The goal gave Sunderland the lead in the 71st minute.

Hull City tried to equalize in the closing stages. Former Sunderland loanee Joe Gelhardt fired over from close range, while Mohamed-Ali Cho missed the target from a corner opportunity. Sunderland held on for the 1-0 victory and will play in the fourth round, which is scheduled for late October.

Both teams made extensive changes to their lineups. Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris made 11 changes from the side that drew with Brentford at the weekend, with Dayan Metalli and Jules Aholou making their debuts and Malik Fofana making his first start. Hull City manager Sergei Yakirovich rotated eight players after their goalless draw with Aston Villa, with Mohamed-Ali Cho, Sorba Thomas and Robinho Vaz also making their first starts.
