Arda Guler was not included in Real Madrid's squad list for the Champions League match against Inter Milan at home. Fans first thought it was because of an injury, but the reason for the 21-year-old midfielder's absence was not an injury.

Not injured, but suspended.

Guler's absence from the Champions League clash at the Bernabeu was unrelated to injury. He needed to serve a suspension carried over from last season's Champions League. The Turkey international was sent off in Real Madrid's previous Champions League match, which was the away second leg of the quarter-final against Bayern Munich, a game Real Madrid lost.

Guler received two yellow cards after the final whistle and was shown a red card by referee Slavko Vincic. Shortly before that, Eduardo Camavinga had also been sent off by the same referee. Guler then had a heated argument with the referee and was eventually dismissed as well.

Who will replace him?

In the first four La Liga rounds this season, Guler started three matches, mainly playing on the right side. Unable to face Inter Milan, Mourinho selected Brahim Diaz in the starting lineup to replace Guler.

Six first-team players unavailable.

Mourinho's selection difficulties involve more than just Guler. Camavinga and Bernardo Silva were also unavailable due to suspension, further reducing the midfield options. Rodrygo, Eder Militao and Ferland Mendy were sidelined due to injuries. With three players suspended and three injured, Real Madrid had a total of six first-team players unavailable for the home match against Inter Milan.
