19-Year-Old Centre-Back Leads Europe's Top Five Leagues with 7 Goals, Brighton's Record Signing Becomes Sole Bright Spot

Brighton signed 11 new players this summer, but so far only record signing Luka Vuskovic has truly delivered value for money. The 19-year-old Croatian centre-back has played every minute of the first three league matches and scored a headed equaliser against Leeds United, netting his seventh goal since last season — a figure unmatched by any centre-back in Europe's top five leagues.

Record transfer fee, ready to make an immediate impact

Vuskovic joined Brighton from Tottenham for an initial transfer fee of £46 million, which could rise to £50 million with add-ons. The 19-year-old has proven his worth through his performances: he started all of the first three league matches and completed every minute, becoming the most consistent presence in the team's defence. Last season he was loaned to Hamburg, and since then he has scored seven goals, with no centre-back in Europe's top five leagues scoring more during the same period.

In Saturday's 1-1 home draw with Leeds United, Vuskovic headed in a corner delivered by De Cuyper to bring Brighton level. Head coach Hurzeler said after the match: "He has the physical qualities to adapt quickly to the Premier League, but we cannot underestimate the fact that he is still very young. For his age, he plays very maturely. He has adapted very quickly, but there will also be moments when he loses focus and moments when he lacks experience, and these things will improve over time."

A new defensive partnership takes shape, while other signings need time

The partnership between Vuskovic and 34-year-old captain Lewis Dunk is beginning to take shape, with Dunk also playing every minute of the league season so far. In contrast, the other new signings have taken much longer to integrate. Dutch defender Pascal Struijk was injured during pre-season and did not come on until the 93rd minute against his former club Leeds United. Austrian international Michael Svoboda has only just returned to training after a knee injury.

Struijk and Svoboda are not the only new arrivals who may feature more in the Europa Conference League than the Premier League. Deadline-day signing Femi Azeez missed the match against Leeds United due to a minor injury from his time at Millwall, and the Nigerian winger will face strong competition after Kaoru Mitoma and Minteh return from injury. Canadian striker Promise David has played only 22 minutes in total, coming off the bench in the 4-3 defeat to Chelsea and against Leeds United.

Injury problems in attack leave options limited

Greek youngster Kostoulas is still adapting and continued to lead the line on Saturday, while former Leeds forward Rutter missed his third consecutive match. The Frenchman is expected to return soon, and his performances at Brighton have generally suited the No. 10 role more than the No. 9 position. However, under the current circumstances, he is Hurzeler's most reliable option at centre-forward, with Stefanos Tzimas (knee injury) and Evan Ferguson (ankle injury) both facing long-term absences.

Among Hurzeler's regular attacking quartet, No. 10 Jack Hinshelwood (thigh injury) is also unavailable, while Kaoru Mitoma, Minteh and Hinshelwood are all unable to return in the short term. This means Brighton's attacking firepower will remain limited for a period, and Vuskovic's goals from defence could become an important source of points for the team.
