Pat Nevin: Luke Shaw was phenomenal, Grealish changed the game

Pat Nevin praised Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw for his “exceptional” performance in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Everton.

Manchester United were originally on course for consecutive wins, but Sesko scored a headed goal in the 87th minute, with Luke Shaw making an overlapping run and providing the assist with a cross. Shaw had a difficult start to the new season, struggling in the opening-round 0-2 defeat to promoted side Hull City. However, head coach Carrick resisted outside criticism and did not sign another left-back at the end of the transfer window, continuing to trust Shaw.

Shaw repaid his manager's trust with a complete performance. He continued to create threats in attack and made an excellent late block, almost helping the team secure all three points. Everton's sustained pressure eventually paid off in stoppage time, when substitute Maitland-Niles scored with a long-range effort to level the score. However, former Everton winger Nevin was impressed by Shaw's display and felt that he looked like he had returned to his peak form.

Nevin told British media: “Luke Shaw should be pleased with his performance. His reaction was excellent, and he can go home feeling satisfied today. Sesko did well, but Luke Shaw's performance on the left was phenomenal. Tyrique George failed to stay with him, and Shaw completed the cross easily. George knew that he had lost his man.”

The point kept Everton unbeaten at the start of the season, but the fan base had serious dissatisfaction over the club's lack of signings during the transfer window. Nevin added: “If you are an Everton fan, this point will give you a huge boost. There are players in the team who can compete with top sides; they will fight and work together. In the end, injuries are inevitable. Can you imagine what would happen if Grealish got injured again? He completely changed the game after coming on.”
