Carragher: Martinez is no longer the goalkeeper who won the World Cup

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher expressed concerns over Argentine goalkeeper Damian Martinez, who Chelsea signed this summer, after the Blues suffered a 2-1 Premier League defeat to Arsenal.

Morgan Rogers scored directly from the edge of the penalty area just two minutes into the match to give Chelsea a perfect start. Kai Havertz equalised against his former club midway through the first half, with his shot beating Damian Martinez at the near post; Martin Odegaard then scored the winner in the second half.

Carragher believes Chelsea signing Martinez for only £7.5 million was a "very good deal", but the former Aston Villa goalkeeper has already shown signs that he is not at his peak. While analysing Havertz's goal for Sky Sports, Carragher said: "I think this goalkeeper would have saved that two or three years ago."

Carragher also said: "For everyone, it is better that Chelsea have moved Robert Sanchez out of the starting goalkeeper role because he has not reached the required level, although he is a good goalkeeper. This is not a bad deal. Getting Damian Martinez for £7.5 million is even a very good deal. He is still an excellent goalkeeper, even better than Robert Sanchez, and this will give everyone more confidence."

Carragher added: "Damian Martinez was once a very good goalkeeper, and he is still a very good goalkeeper, but he is no longer the goalkeeper who won the World Cup, and this match showed a little bit of that." Speaking about the gap in quality between Chelsea and Arsenal, he said: "There is a huge difference between the two teams' starting line-ups and their overall squads."
