World Sport: Barcelona Have La Liga’s Youngest Squad This Season, But Their Players Show Mature Quality

According to World Sport, with the summer transfer window closed, Barcelona’s first-team squad for the 2026-27 season has been officially confirmed. The team led by head coach Hans Flick has a clear characteristic: an average age of just 24.4 years, making it the youngest squad by average age in La Liga.

However, unlike a traditional young team, Barcelona’s squad is relatively young in age but has already accumulated considerable championship experience. Sporting director Deco adjusted the squad this summer around Flick’s tactical needs, hoping to further improve the team’s energy and rotation depth to prepare for challenges in major competitions such as La Liga and the Champions League.

During Flick’s first two seasons in charge of Barcelona, he has consistently emphasized high pressing and match intensity, and the team’s signings and squad construction for the new season reflect the same approach. As the schedule becomes more demanding, Barcelona need more players capable of maintaining a high-intensity level, so the club hopes to preserve enough energy throughout the season by expanding rotation options.

This summer, Barcelona’s squad no longer includes veterans such as Robert Lewandowski and Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The former is currently 38 years old, while the latter is 34. At the same time, the overall age of the club’s new signings has not significantly increased the squad’s average age.

Among them, Ballon d’Or winner Rodri is approaching 30 but remains in the prime stage of his career; new signing Gabriel Jesus is only 29 years old. The 32-year-old Cancelo is one of the few older players in the squad, but his presence has not changed Barcelona’s overall trend toward youth.

World Sport noted that Barcelona have been trying to continue their youth-oriented approach in recent years. Deco first renewed contracts with the team’s existing young core players and then strengthened the squad by bringing in suitable additions, increasing experience while maintaining the team’s energy.

Among them, Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi have already become two of Barcelona’s most important young players. Both became key figures for the team before turning 20 and have accumulated extensive high-level match experience at both club and national-team levels.

Especially Lamine Yamal, who already has three La Liga championship trophies. Despite his very young age, he is no longer a newcomer lacking major tournament experience.

Barcelona’s youth development is also reflected at the Spain national-team level. There are currently eight Barcelona players in Spain’s World Cup-winning core, and apart from Rodri, the other seven are all under 30 years old. This means Barcelona not only have many young players, but also a group of players who have already proven themselves in the highest-level competitions.

Compared with La Liga’s main rivals, Barcelona’s advantage in youth is even clearer. Real Madrid’s first-team squad has an average age of 25.7 years, while Atletico Madrid’s average age is 26.7 years, with both teams significantly older than Barcelona.

Therefore, World Sport believes Barcelona’s squad for the new season has formed a special combination: youth, energy, and championship experience existing together.

For Flick, this squad provides more rotation options and helps the team maintain the intensity required for long-term high pressing. At the same time, young core players such as Lamine Yamal and Cubarsi already have enough top-level match experience, meaning Barcelona are not simply relying on young players to develop, but hope to use this group of young and mature players to directly challenge for the highest honors.
