Manchester City Strengthen Midfield Depth as Maresca Says More Options Are Needed to Compete with Arsenal

Enzo Maresca believes Manchester City now have the squad depth required to handle multiple competitions in midfield, with the Italian coach using Arsenal as an example to explain that top clubs need several high-level options.

Manchester City carried out a major midfield rebuild this summer, bringing in Enzo Fernandez, Elliot Anderson and Ayoub Bouaddi after several key players departed.

These signings have given Maresca greater flexibility, especially as Manchester City attempt to reclaim the Premier League title from Arsenal.

Speaking about the depth available to him, Maresca made it clear that having multiple strong midfield choices is a necessity rather than a luxury.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Maresca said: "If you want to compete, you need options."

"I am very happy with the options I have at the moment."

The comments come after Manchester City's major investment this summer. Fernandez joined from Chelsea for £125 million, Anderson cost £116 million, while Bouaddi gives Maresca another highly rated young midfielder to develop.

Fernandez has already made an immediate impression. According to Reuters, the Argentina international made his debut in Manchester City's 1-0 win over Coventry on Saturday, performing well and playing a key role in the move that led to Haaland's winning goal.

Maresca's emphasis on depth is understandable, as last season showed how quickly injuries and fatigue can derail a title challenge.

Arsenal successfully rotated their squad during their title-winning season, especially in midfield and defensive positions. Manchester City are now clearly determined to match that level of squad depth.

Anderson can operate as a No. 6 or No. 8, Fernandez provides passing range and creativity, while Bouaddi brings technical ability and long-term potential. Maresca can also call upon players such as Nico O'Reilly and Marc Guehi in central areas when needed.

This versatility will be extremely valuable across the Premier League, Champions League and domestic cup competitions.
