Sunderland Fail to Hijack Move for Mexico International Erik Lira, Player to Stay Until January

Sunderland attempted to sign Cruz Azul midfielder Erik Lira in the final stages of the summer transfer window, but the Mexico international will remain with the club until at least January next year.

The 26-year-old had made it clear earlier this year that he wanted to move to Europe for a new challenge, an ambition that attracted attention from several clubs.

Monaco had been leading the race at one stage, but Sunderland also tried to enter the picture before the deadline, hoping to bring another defensive midfielder to the Stadium of Light.

According to Mexican media outlet Record, Sunderland joined the competition while Monaco were working on a move for Lira. Lira and his team had a clear strategy throughout the summer: prioritising offers from top European leagues rather than simply accepting the first overseas contract available.

The strategy ultimately backfired. Neither Sunderland nor Monaco were able to complete a deal before the window closed, meaning Lira must stay at Cruz Azul unless another suitable market remains open.

His performances had already attracted attention from Manchester City earlier this year, highlighting the level of recognition he has received.

The midfielder had also publicly expressed his desire to move to Europe, and ESPN reported earlier this year that Lira viewed joining a major European league as an important next step in his career.
