With James now joining the 76ers, there has been widespread discussion about how teams will try to limit them in the new season. Former NBA player Patrick Beverley appeared on a program and said:

“I think the game plan is actually simple. There are some results you have to accept. Offensively, I would try to target LeBron and Embiid in every pick-and-roll situation. I want to use offense to create defense. If LeBron is guarding you, come set the screen. After the screen, move away and bring Embiid into the action. Whenever there is a chance, I want to make those two guys involved in every defensive possession.”

“Whenever I face LeBron, I will attack him, drive to the basket and force Embiid to provide help defense every time. This approach allows me to handle both offense and defense while gradually wearing them down. If VJ Edgecombe and LeBron want to beat me, both of them need to make five or six three-pointers each tonight, for a combined total of 11 threes.”

“If Maxey gets the ball, I will immediately send a double team; if Embiid gets the ball, the same thing. Jalen Brown has the ball? Fine, I can accept him scoring 20-25 points. But the others, Edgecombe and LeBron—I know LeBron very well. He has delivered many times in the past, but this time they will have to beat me by making their threes.”

“I will not accept Embiid scoring 50 points. I will not accept Maxey scoring 30 points, getting to the free-throw line six times and making six threes. I won't accept that. What I can accept is VJ Edgecombe making shots, and I can accept LeBron James at his current age making shots.”

Beverley said the core of the strategy is forcing James and young VJ Edgecombe to step up and beat him. Edgecombe has just begun his second season and is not yet a star player. Beverley believes every game requires choices, and compared with the damage caused by Maxey and Embiid, the impact of these two players having a big game is more acceptable.

On defense, Beverley advocated targeting James and Embiid on every possession. Embiid was once an elite defender, but years of injuries have significantly affected his mobility, and his defensive issues were already exposed in the previous playoffs. James was also once considered a top defender, but the decline caused by age is an objective reality.

Beverley continued: “I would use a lot of zone defense. Whenever LeBron brings the ball up, I want to apply pressure throughout the court and make things difficult for him. If LeBron wants to bring the ball across half court, we will start applying pressure from the backcourt. The goal is simply to wear him down and wear Embiid down.”

“When the second unit comes onto the court, that is our chance to create separation. From a coach's perspective, if I can develop a bench unit capable of competing at a playoff level, we will have a chance to win.”

To win, taking advantage of the minutes when the 76ers' bench players are on the floor will be crucial. The 76ers have useful role players on their bench such as Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, but once multiple stars leave the court to rest, the team's strength can still noticeably decline. If your bench cannot gain an advantage, the game will become difficult.

Speaking of difficulties, after watching Jalen Brown, James and Maxey practice together, Beverley used that word to describe the situation facing other teams around the league. He said the trio's training form looked excellent and that other teams should be concerned.

However, Beverley's proposed way to limit the 76ers focuses on wearing down James and repeatedly attacking him in isolation. Will this really work against a 42-year-old James? Who can confidently say they can score on James in every one-on-one possession? James should not be underestimated. With so many strong teammates sharing the pressure, James should be able to play comfortably in the new season.
