Dirk Nowitzki Expresses ‘Doubt’ About Jalen Brunson Leading Knicks to Championship

Dirk Nowitzki expressed “doubt” that Jalen Brunson would lead the Knicks to their first championship in 53 years.

Before 2026 Finals MVP Jalen Brunson led the New York Knicks to their first championship in 53 years, he spent his rookie season with the Dallas Mavericks, playing alongside Dirk Nowitzki. This weekend, Brunson will host “Saturday Night Live,” bringing his offseason victory journey to a conclusion. Nowitzki said Brunson deserved the opportunity after New York’s historic achievement.

According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, Nowitzki reflected on Brunson’s growth over the years and admitted that he did not initially expect Brunson to develop into a Finals MVP-caliber player.

“I’m happy for him. I love watching him continue to improve. Honestly, when he joined New York as the team’s leading star, I had some doubts,” Nowitzki said. “He is a pretty quiet person, even a little shy. Going to a major media market like New York, I was a little concerned at the time. But he has been excellent both on and off the court. He truly carried the team. He deserved to win the championship and bring a title back to New York after more than 50 years. Finals MVP. It has been an unbelievable journey. Honestly, I didn’t think he would achieve this.”

“I knew he was already very steady during his rookie season. He was smart and knew how to find his best spots.” I could see that he had incredible professionalism. Hall of Fame forward Dirk Nowitzki praised the playing approach of Knicks All-Star Jalen Brunson.

“His footwork, quickness, and the way he finds the best spots to shoot are amazing,” Nowitzki added. “It is really fun to watch him play and follow him. We all know he is a great person. So, we are all happy for him.”

Nowitzki added that after the Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 to advance to the 2026 NBA Finals, he contacted his former Mavericks teammate.

“I just told him, ‘I’m incredibly proud of you,’ and you deserve this,” Nowitzki said. “Enjoy this honor. You have been the best throughout the summer, you are the best team, and you will receive countless praise.”

The Knicks will begin their preseason schedule on October 5 against the Philadelphia 76ers.
