Nets Expected to Struggle Next Season, Could Rockets Benefit From It?

According to the well-known sports media outlet ESPN's projections, the standings of Eastern Conference teams for next season have begun to take shape. The Knicks are widely viewed as the favorites, with an expected record of 53 wins and 29 losses to finish first in the East. Following them are the Pistons, Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Boston Celtics, who are expected to be among the top contenders for the championship.

In addition, five teams, including the Hawks, Heat, Raptors, Pacers, and Magic, are considered play-in tournament-level competitors. Although these teams all have star players, their respective weaknesses are also apparent and will not be discussed further.

Among the five teams projected to finish at the bottom are the Hornets, Wizards, Bulls, Bucks, and Brooklyn Nets, with the Nets drawing particular attention. Despite adding All-Star power forward Randle and forward Michael Porter Jr. this summer, their overall strength is still considered among the lowest in the Eastern Conference. Their chances of making the playoffs appear slim.

ESPN experts predict that the Nets will finish the new season with only an 18-64 record, ranking 15th in the Eastern Conference and dropping to the bottom position, which is viewed as almost certain. This situation would be good news for the Rockets, because the Nets' first-round draft pick could almost fall into Houston's hands. The two teams previously agreed to a draft pick swap as part of the Harden trade. Therefore, if the Nets perform poorly as expected, the Rockets will have an opportunity to obtain this highly valuable first-round pick.

Although the NBA draft system has changed, as a team that could potentially have the league's worst record, the Nets would have a strong chance of obtaining the No. 1 overall pick. If the Rockets can make use of this selection, they could choose an emerging young prospect and further strengthen the team. In other words, the worse the Nets perform, the greater the benefit for the Rockets.

Next season, the Rockets will not only have an opportunity to compete for a championship but could also gain a chance at the No. 1 overall pick. If they obtain that pick, they would have young players such as Sengun, Amen Thompson, Sheppard, and Jabari Smith Jr., along with a talented rookie, allowing the Rockets to quickly rebuild into a team capable of competing for a championship.
