Clippers fined five first-round picks and $30 million; Skip calls Ballmer's investment the most unsuccessful in history

The NBA officially announced today that, due to the Clippers' improper operations during the recruitment of Leonard, the team was heavily penalized with the loss of five first-round draft picks and a $30 million fine, while also forfeiting their 2026 second-round draft pick. Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank and head coach Tyronn Lue were also each fined.

According to ESPN reporter Shams Charania, after a year-long investigation, the NBA made its final ruling on the Clippers' alleged improper recruitment related to Leonard. On his show today, Skip said directly: “Kawhi Leonard cost the Clippers as many as 10 first-round picks, but during his six seasons with the team, they only reached the Western Conference semifinals once—that was during the bubble season, when the Clippers were dramatically overturned by the Nuggets after taking a 3-1 lead.”

Skip believes the severe punishment confirms what he considers the most unsuccessful investment in NBA history by the Clippers. “Now they face a one-year suspension punishment, and Leonard will also miss many games,” Skip added. From spending multiple first-round picks to acquire Leonard to now losing five first-round picks through penalties and facing the long-term absence of a core player, the Clippers' future is filled with uncertainty.

The cost far exceeded expectations

The punishment not only cost the Clippers valuable draft assets, but also made their future rebuilding path much more difficult. Losing five first-round picks means the Clippers will have limited ability to replenish their roster through the draft for years to come. Leonard's injury issues have also further narrowed the team's championship window.
