Sept. 9 — Today, Draymond Green responded to Joe Johnson's comment that “Amen Thompson could receive a $200 million contract despite not having a consistent jump shot,” saying that a player's salary should first be based on what he has already accomplished, rather than simply on future potential.

Green said: “I think the first thing is, you get paid because of what you’ve already done. People always say that teams are paying for what you’re going to become in the future. No, that’s not how it is. In this league, you get paid because of what you’ve already done. Amen Thompson has already put together enough of a résumé. If you want to keep me, this is the market price. Of course, he still needs to improve.”

Green also believes that people often make “developing a jump shot” sound too simple: “Shooting itself is a skill. Of course, you can keep training to improve, but we wouldn’t expect Stephen Curry to suddenly have the kind of athletic ability Amen Thompson has. So we also shouldn’t always see a player who doesn’t shoot well and think that all he needs to do is develop a jump shot.” Green emphasized that Amen has already reached an elite level in terms of his leaping ability, defense, and movement on the court.
