At 23:45 Beijing time on September 9, the final showdown of the Berlin World Cup playoffs is about to begin.
China women’s basketball team will face Puerto Rico, with CCTV5 broadcasting the game live. The winner advances and the loser is eliminated.
After a roller-coaster group stage, China must control four key variables in this do-or-die game to secure victory.

I. The group stage revealed both sides of the team
China showed major fluctuations in three Group D games. On September 4, they lost 61-94 to defending champion USA, being suppressed on both offense and defense.
Against Czech Republic, China trailed by five points with 27 seconds left but rallied to force overtime and won 74-70. Han Xu scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
On September 8 against Italy, China won 71-51, opening a 23-7 first-quarter lead and shooting 8-for-19 from three-point range.
Han Xu scored 19 points and 10 rebounds efficiently, Yang Shuyu added 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, and Zhang Ziyu scored 8 points off the bench.
The three games showed China’s strong execution when organized, but also vulnerability under pressure. Li Yueru missed the tournament through injury, increasing Han Xu’s interior burden, while Zhang Ziyu needs more experience.
Finishing second in the group earned China a playoff spot against Puerto Rico, but the opponent is also a battle-tested team.

II. Puerto Rico’s weapons after escaping a difficult group
Puerto Rico was placed in the highly competitive Group C with Australia and Belgium, eventually earning a playoff place through the battle with Turkey.
Puerto Rico lost 54-70 to Australia and 64-76 to Belgium before defeating Turkey 75-71 with a fourth-quarter comeback.
Puerto Rico averaged 64.3 points and 12.3 assists, but its real strength is aggressive defense and fast breaks created by steals.
The 2-meter naturalized center Stafford is the interior anchor, averaging 17.3 points and 13 rebounds in group play.
Guard San Antonio shoots 60% from three and averages five steals per game. Forward Guirantes is the tactical hub with driving and shooting ability.
China lost to Puerto Rico in an August warm-up game. Although warm-ups have limited value, it showed Puerto Rico is not afraid of physical play. China’s perfect official record against them does not guarantee victory.
China must make four tactical improvements to counter Puerto Rico.

III. Four adjustments are crucial for the playoff battle
First, maximize Han Xu’s tactical influence instead of keeping her in the low post. Puerto Rico may use frequent double teams against her.
Han should operate more from high positions to create space. Zhang Ziyu can provide rotation minutes, while teammates help reduce Han’s defensive burden.
Second, build a turnover firewall and reduce passing risks. Puerto Rico’s winning formula is forcing mistakes and scoring in transition.

Wang Siyu’s organization is key against pressure. She had six assists and only two turnovers in 20 minutes against Italy. Keeping turnovers below 15 would limit Puerto Rico.
Third, control the pace and avoid being dragged into chaos. China should use half-court offense, screens and interior play against pressure.
Slowing the game can reduce Puerto Rico’s transition opportunities while securing defensive rebounds.

Fourth, stay focused and avoid relaxing after taking a lead. China nearly lost control against Czech Republic, while Puerto Rico recently completed a comeback against Turkey.
Even with a lead, the coaching staff must keep making adjustments and treat every possession as decisive.
Only by defeating Puerto Rico can China reach the quarterfinals and face France. For now, all focus is on this game.
