Torre: NBA Once Gave Ballmer a Chance to Accept Punishment, but He Chose to Deny - NBA News

Sept. 3 — Pablo Torre revealed that before the official punishment was announced, the NBA approached Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, informing him that the league believed it had obtained evidence of violations and giving him an opportunity to acknowledge improper conduct, accept punishment, and resolve the matter as soon as possible.

According to Torre, the message conveyed by the league at the time was roughly: "We have undeniable evidence; we just want to make sure you have the opportunity to accept the punishment, admit the mistake, and then allow everyone to move forward." This meant that before the final public investigation results were released, the NBA had attempted to resolve the matter internally.

However, Ballmer ultimately chose to deny the league's determination and hired lawyers to challenge it. Torre said that based on everything that happened publicly afterward, Ballmer decided to confront the NBA directly and launch his own counteraction rather than accept the solution proposed by the league.
