Siegel: Clippers’ Punishment Is Close to a ‘Death Sentence,’ Leonard Escaping Relatively Unscathed Is Laughable

Sept. 3 — ClutchPoints reporter Brett Siegel discussed the punishments received by Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers, saying: “This is one of the most severe punishments we have ever seen in professional sports... This is the heaviest punishment against a team, and as an organization, this is already as close as it gets to a ‘death sentence.’”

Siegel believes that the loss of five first-round picks, a $30 million fine, along with owner Steve Ballmer and multiple executives being suspended, will have a major impact on the Clippers’ competitiveness and team operations for years to come.

However, in his view, the biggest winner from the situation is Leonard. “He almost got away unscathed, and I think that is laughable.” Compared with the enormous cost absorbed by the Clippers, Leonard himself received relatively limited punishment, leading Siegel to believe that the consequences faced by the two sides were clearly unequal.
