2-for-3! Lakers-Clippers Trade Proposal Brings Championship Center, 3-and-D Wing to Support Doncic Again

On September 8 Beijing time, after the Clippers opened up their roster market, U.S. media reported a proposed Lakers-Clippers trade scenario.

The specific proposal has the Clippers receiving three young players: Hardy, LaRavia and Knecht, while the Lakers acquire two veteran contributors in Brook Lopez and Derrick Jones Jr.

For the Clippers, the rebuilding process had already officially begun. More troubling is that they do not hold their own first-round picks for the next five years, making it a priority to clear veteran contracts on the roster.

Under normal circumstances, using players of Lopez and Jones Jr.'s level to get back first-round picks would be almost impossible, but receiving three players in their prime would make this a profitable move for the Clippers.

Hardy and LaRavia are both 24 years old, while Knecht is only 25. All three are promising players who entered the league only a few years ago, and the Clippers could gradually develop them as future core pieces.

Even if they do not want to develop them long term, the Clippers could allow these players to produce strong numbers first and then use them in trades for first-round picks, giving them plenty of flexibility.

After all, former Lakers players have often shown their abilities elsewhere. Knecht in particular has real talent, but he seemed to lose confidence with the Lakers and was unable to fully play freely.

If he moved to another team and environment with enough opportunities and a larger tactical role, he could produce impressive performances and potentially make the Lakers front office regret the decision.

For the Lakers, the current roster is nearly complete, with defense being the remaining issue. Their backcourt offensive firepower ranks among the league's best.

Doncic, Reaves, Sexton and Grimes together create overwhelming offensive firepower, making it difficult for opposing backcourts to handle them, but defense remains a clear weakness.

Derrick Jones Jr. is already familiar with Doncic. He previously helped Doncic reach the Finals with the Mavericks, so their chemistry would not require much time to rebuild.

Jones Jr.'s defense is clearly above the league average, and although his three-point shooting is not elite, it is still serviceable. Last season he averaged 1.1 made threes per game with a 35.9% shooting rate.

With him anchoring the small forward position, the Lakers' wing defense would improve immediately. He could defend opposing wing scorers while also waiting in the corner for kick-out three-point opportunities.

As for Lopez, although he is already 38 years old, he has maintained his form. After Zubac left last season, Lopez still averaged 8.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game with solid efficiency.

He also averaged 1.5 made threes per game at a 36% rate. As a floor-spacing shooting center, he could provide the Lakers with another tactical option.

The Lakers' current centers Kessler and Looney do not provide three-point shooting. Lopez could stretch the floor and create more driving opportunities for Doncic and teammates.

Another advantage is that both players' contracts expire in 2027. If they perform well, the Lakers can extend them and keep them; if not, they can simply move on with limited risk and loss.

In short, this trade is described as a typical win-win scenario: the Clippers receive young assets needed for rebuilding, while the Lakers address their biggest needs in defense and spacing while pursuing championship contention.
