Lakers' Sexton Reveals Key Reason Behind Signing

Collin Sexton recently shared his main motivation for signing a two-year, $19 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. As a backcourt player actively sought by the Lakers, Sexton could be the strong addition the team needs after parting ways with legendary player LeBron James during the offseason. In an exclusive interview with ESPN, he expressed his appreciation for the team's current atmosphere.

"The atmosphere here is great," Sexton said. "Everyone is very welcoming and friendly, and communication with the coaches and teammates has been very smooth. We have many new faces on the team, so every day we are learning and growing together." He explained in detail why he chose to join the Lakers when free agency opened early.

"I think the most important thing is that this place gives me an opportunity to win games and also allows me to showcase myself on a bigger stage and contribute to the team's victories." He noted that the environments of his previous teams were relatively more difficult, although he had always wanted to win. Winning in the NBA is not easy, and every day requires competing against top teams. Being here, contributing to team victories every day, and feeling that he can make a unique impact on the team and the game makes him feel honored. "I feel like I have fit into this team very smoothly," Sexton added.

The Lakers signed the 6-foot-3 guard to a two-year, $19 million contract in July, with a player option included in the second year. Sexton was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the eighth overall pick in 2018 and spent four seasons with the team, during which he was also named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.

In 2022, he was traded to the Utah Jazz in a deal involving Lauri Markkanen, Ochai Agbaji, multiple future first-round draft picks, and draft pick swaps. Donovan Mitchell was also traded to the Cavaliers in the same deal.

After that, he had brief stints with the Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls before eventually arriving in Los Angeles. Now joining the Lakers, he will form a partnership with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, becoming the team's third option. Sexton will take on ball-handling responsibilities, helping reduce the pressure on other key players.
