Brother Helps Secure 5-Year, $208 Million Deal for Brother; Ausar Is Next

Amen Thompson, the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, has agreed with the Rockets on a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale extension. The deal also sets a record for the largest contract in Rockets franchise history. The person who helped Amen negotiate this major contract was his older brother, Troy Thompson.

Troy Thompson, Amen's older brother, is 31 years old this year and is eight years older than his two younger brothers. Unlike his brothers, Troy did not pursue a professional playing career. He played college basketball at Oregon State University early on, then transferred to Prairie View A&M University, where he played two seasons of NCAA Division I basketball. He appeared in 59 games, averaging 8.6 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. In 2019, Troy received a training camp contract with the NBA G League's Memphis Hustle, but was released due to a serious shoulder injury, ending his dream of becoming a professional player.

After that, Troy gradually transitioned into becoming an agent and is affiliated with G.A.P.P. Sports Group. He has only two clients under his name, Amen and Ausar. This year, Troy helped his younger brother Amen negotiate the five-year, $208 million contract. According to NBA rules, agents can receive a maximum commission of 4% from a player's salary.

Next, Troy will be responsible for negotiating Ausar's extension with the Pistons. Ausar was the No. 5 pick in the 2023 draft, and he currently has one year remaining on his contract with the Pistons. Because extension talks between the Pistons and Ausar have not progressed smoothly, there have been no media reports about Ausar's extension situation so far.
