Spurs-Fox for Garland Trade Proposal: The Calculations Behind the Contract Numbers

After the Clippers were heavily punished by the NBA, a trade proposal involving the Spurs and Victor Wembanyama has surfaced. The core of the proposal is: trade De'Aaron Fox for Darius Garland, along with a first-round pick.

How does the accounting behind this trade work?

NBA insider Sam Quinn proposed this idea on a podcast: “Darius Garland for De'Aaron Fox plus a first-round pick.” Looking at the contract figures, Garland's deal is worth $197.23 million over five years and runs through the end of the 2027-28 season. Fox has just entered the first year of his four-year, $221.71 million extension. In the 2026-27 season alone, Garland's salary is $42.17 million, about $7.3 million less than Fox's $49.49 million salary. For the Spurs, this would mean replacing a more expensive contract with a more manageable one.

Why would the Clippers be willing to take on the deal?

The Clippers were recently stripped of five first-round picks from 2029 through 2033 by the NBA, fined $30 million, and owner Steve Ballmer was suspended for one year. At this point, getting back a first-round pick is more important to the Clippers than anything else. Taking on Fox's large contract in exchange for a first-round pick is viewed by the Clippers as a worthwhile move. With Kawhi Leonard reportedly expected to be traded to the Raptors, the Clippers would instead have more salary-cap space to absorb Fox's contract. Heavy's Sean Deveney also expressed a similar view: “The Clippers could put Garland on the market to replenish their draft assets.”

Why would the Spurs be interested?

Fox's contract and his fit with the team have remained uncertain. Although coaches and teammates have praised the veteran's arrival, Dylan Harper's emergence has made Fox's contract seem less necessary. Interestingly, the idea of Garland joining the Spurs existed before Fox became a target for San Antonio. The agents of both players, Rich Paul, revealed that he had previously explored the possibility of Garland going to the Spurs.

If this trade were completed, the Spurs would acquire Garland at a lower salary cost while pairing Victor Wembanyama with what could be a more suitable backcourt partner; the Clippers would receive a first-round pick in exchange for Garland and begin rebuilding their asset pool. Both sides could get what they need, but whether the deal can ultimately happen will depend on future negotiations.
