LeBron James has partnered with the crypto prediction platform Polymarket, which is valued at $9 billion. The announcement video gained tens of thousands of views within hours of its release, but it also drew criticism from many fans. The NBA's all-time leading scorer posted a 14-second video on social media in which he rode an elevator with buttons labeled politics, crypto, sports, economy, culture, weather, esports, and technology. He ultimately selected “sports,” exited the elevator, and walked toward the Polymarket logo.
Partnership Announcement and Fan Reactions

James wrote in his caption: “Welcome to Polymarket HQ, coming soon. Partnering with Polymarket.” He also included an eye emoji. The post was published at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time and received tens of thousands of views within minutes. Within an hour, Polymarket responded to James' post: “Thank you for stopping by our HQ,” along with a goat emoji referring to “greatest of all time.”
The response indicated that James is indeed Polymarket's first independently signed athlete. Previously, Polymarket signed a four-year, $300 million partnership agreement with Major League Baseball in March and reached a separate agreement with the NHL, further expanding into mainstream sports.
Legal Disputes and Fan Concerns
The expansion has not come without challenges, and those issues have contributed to the criticism James is currently facing. Around 20 states are suing or joining lawsuits against Polymarket and its competitor Kalshi, alleging that their sports-related prediction activities constitute gambling without proper licensing. However, both sides have argued that their prediction products are speculative wagers similar to commodity trading.
Before Polymarket emerged in 2020, James had served as an ambassador for DraftKings since 2024, but his contract expired earlier this year. Following the latest announcement, fans have clearly expressed dissatisfaction. A lack of explanation regarding the purpose of the deal has not eased the online reaction. Fans quickly commented on social media, expressing concerns about athletes using their influence to support platforms associated with gambling during a sensitive period.
Fan Comments and Legacy Debate
“This will affect your legacy, unfortunately,” one fan wrote. Another posted: “No, my king, no Polymarket.” Other comments included: “There was no need to promote this.” One fan stated: “Athletes should not be partners with gambling companies.”
James is the NBA's highest-scoring player and has won four championships. He could risk his legacy by becoming involved with a company currently facing legal challenges. According to reports, James became a billionaire in 2022 and currently has a net worth of $1.4 billion, removing any financial motivation behind his decision to partner with a company still facing lawsuits in around 20 states.
Earlier this year, Giannis Antetokounmpo invested in Kalshi and faced criticism as a result. The incident occurred amid continued scrutiny of professional sports.
