LeBron James announced on social media that he had partnered with Polymarket, a prediction market platform valued at $9 billion, and released a 14-second video. In the video, he rides an elevator past buttons labeled politics, crypto, sports, and economy, eventually choosing “sports” and stepping out of the elevator. The post, published at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time, received tens of thousands of views within minutes.
Polymarket responded to James' post within an hour and added a goat emoji, implying that James is the first individual athlete to sign with the platform. Previously, Polymarket signed a four-year, $300 million partnership with Major League Baseball in March this year and reached a separate agreement with the NHL, further expanding into mainstream sports.

Fans react strongly, concerned about the impact on his reputation
However, the partnership did not receive approval from fans. The comments section was quickly filled with criticism, with one fan writing: “This will affect your reputation, unfortunately.” Another said directly: “No, my king, don't touch Polymarket.” A different fan commented: “Athletes should not be partners with betting platforms.” These reactions reflect widespread dissatisfaction among fans over athletes using their influence to support betting-related platforms during sensitive periods.
In fact, Polymarket is currently facing legal challenges. Reports say that around 20 states are suing or joining lawsuits against Polymarket and its competitor Kalshi, alleging that they operate sports betting businesses without licenses under current laws. However, both platforms argue that their businesses are speculative trading activities similar to commodities markets.
Business expansion continues, but controversy follows
James became a billionaire in 2022, with his net worth reportedly reaching $1.4 billion. Before Polymarket emerged in 2020, James had served as an ambassador for DraftKings since 2024, but that contract expired earlier this year. The partnership with Polymarket represents another expansion of his business portfolio, but choosing to work with a company involved in legal disputes at this time has left many fans puzzled.
It is worth noting that earlier this year, Giannis Antetokounmpo also faced criticism over his investment in Kalshi. One comment read: “There was absolutely no need to promote this.” These incidents show that partnerships between athletes and betting platforms have become a sensitive topic drawing attention from fans and the public.
As the NBA's all-time leading scorer and a player with four championship titles, it remains unclear whether James' partnership will affect his public image. However, the opposition from fans has already been clearly expressed.
