Brunson: 30 Minutes of Focused Training Is Better Than Two Hours; The NBA Was Never My Only Goal

Sept. 5 - Knicks player Jalen Brunson recently discussed his training philosophy and growth journey, saying he has always focused on improving a little every day rather than making reaching the NBA his goal from the beginning.

Jalen Brunson said: “People will say, ‘I spent two hours in the gym today.’ But you ask, ‘What did you do in the gym?’ Instead of wasting two hours in the gym, you can complete a more difficult and higher-quality workout in 30 to 40 minutes. Consistency is important, but precision is even more important. Everything you do needs to have a clear purpose. It definitely requires commitment. I like going out to train, and I also like playing pickup basketball.”

“When we lived in Charlottesville, Virginia, my father worked at the University of Virginia. I would go to community centers and play with college students. We played pickup basketball, and I competed against older players and performed well. At that time, I was not thinking, ‘I want to make it to the NBA.’ The NBA was never mentioned. I just wanted to keep improving myself. My goal at that time was to get into college.”

“It all happened step by step. Of course, I have long-term goals, but I focus on short-term goals. I move forward one step at a time. A lot of people want to reach the destination immediately, and then they become disappointed because they did not enjoy the process. I enjoyed every step of my journey. Enjoy every step you take.”
