Shumpert: Melo Once Taught Me Financial Management Through a High-Priced Dinner Bill, Then Gave Me $10,000 in Cash - NBA News

Sept. 5 — Former NBA player Iman Shumpert revealed on a podcast that Carmelo Anthony once left him with a $7,500 dinner bill to pay as a way of teaching him financial management, and later gave him $10,000 in cash.

"They were quietly teaching you financial management, teaching you what things you should not do. That time, he had me cover a dinner bill of about $7,500. There were about three or four teammates, the driver, as well as Melo's wife and the people accompanying her. In total, there were around 12 to 15 people."

"I watched Melo stand up, and the driver left with the others first, saying, 'I have to take them back.' He had never left me to pay the bill like that before, but that time he did. I was still slowly eating, and then the server directly handed the bill to me. I had no choice but to pay it. I actually felt a lot at that moment, thinking: Does even a casual meal cost this much? I slowly processed the situation."

"The next day, Melo brought me $10,000 in cash. He wanted me to understand that if you take this many people out to eat, you will face bills of this size. He wanted me to personally experience that pressure, because I was not prepared to pay that amount of money. Don't just casually take 15 people out for a meal."
